Biology Education Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), State University of Makassar (Universitas Negeri Makassar) hosted an International Workshop with the theme of ‘Action Research in Science Education’. The workshop is the first event of the three-workshop series which will be continued in July and December 2022. The workshop invited three speakers from different institutions: 1) Professor David F. Treagust of Curtin University, 2) Dr. Hye-Eun Chu of Macquarie University, and 3) Dr. S.Ravindran of the Academy of Singapore Teachers. The workshop combined face-to-face and online (Zoom) meetings. The face-to-face meeting was held in the FMIPA building, State University of Makassar (Universitas Negeri Makassar). About 40 science teacher educators attended the face-to-face meeting. They are teaching staff in the FMIPA. In addition, about 580 participants from different institutions around Indonesia participated in the Zoom meeting.
The workshop is part of the Linking Science Educators Program (LSEP) project funded by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). The project lead by Dr Hye-Eun Chu of the School of Education, Macquarie in Sydney Australia, Dr Faisal of the Department of Biology Education, State University of Makassar, Indonesia, and Dr Rachel Ruggirello of Washington University in St. Louis, United States. The primary aim of the project is to raise Indonesian science teachers’ and teacher educators’ understanding of action research. In the project, the team will develop a program to familiarise the participants with the theory and methodology of action research, and the conclusion of the project will assess the impact of the program on the science teachres’ and teacher educators’ understanding of action research.
